Background

This study is being conducted in accordance with the requirements of a Group B project under the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Facilities (2000). It will identify rehabilitation, safety and operational needs, develop and evaluate alternatives, and recommend improvements within the study limits. Proposed work along Highway 400 include the Replacement of Tiffin Street Overpass, Site 30-176, and the Rehabilitation of Barrie-Collingwood Railway Overpass, Site 30-177.

Project Purpose

The purpose of this project is to replace the existing 6-lane Highway 400 overpass structure at Tiffin Street and to rehabilitate/strengthen the existing 6-lane Barrie-Collingwood Railway Overhead structure at Highway 400, in the City of Barrie. These bridges are being replaced as they are nearing the end of their service life span. The new structures will result in an increase the vertical clearance for Tiffin Street, and an increased opening span which will provide for increased future flexibility. The project will include traffic management measures to facilitate the rehabilitation and replacement of the structures and to maintain traffic flow in the area. As part of the traffic management measures, a staged replacement of the Tiffin Street Overpass is being proposed.

Consultation

Consultation is an integral component of the Class EA process and essential to the successful completion of the study.
